South African passport holders travelling to Europe via the UK have been turned away from Cape Town International Airport and OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg because they had the wrong category of Schengen visa. There are two types – C and D visas – and passengers are advised to check with the British High Commission, to ensure that they have the correct type. Travel centre staff are not always best qualified to understand the regulations imposed by government agencies. Airlines face hefty fines if they carry passengers to the UK without the right paperwork, and these passengers themselves are likely to be put back on the next flight to South Africa.
