The South African government has committed itself to developing renewable energy for the future. As well has hosting the COP 17 Climate Change Convention at Durban this week and next, the government recently pledged some 25 billion Rand over the next five years for the development of green projects and technologies and the manufacture of eco-friendly products.
Under the Green Economy Accord, the government and industry insiders propose introducing solar power to at least four of the country's airports, including O R Tambo and Bloemfontein. According to Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), airports need to benefit from alternative energy sources as the country is likely to face electricity shortages in the coming years. Solar power installations at the four airports selected could collectively generate 20 megawatts of electricity. Although ACSA is still awaiting approval to go forward with the project, if endorsed a solar power installation will be mounted on the roof of the parkade building at O R Tambo. The resulting energy is expected to boost the airport's electricity supplies for the next 20 years.
